AAT – Animal Assisted Therapy
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a targeted and professionally guided intervention that uses the positive influence of the presence and interaction with animals as a supportive tool in the treatment process. The goal of AAT is to support the physical, emotional, cognitive, or social health of the client.
The therapy is conducted under the guidance of a qualified professional—such as a psychologist, physical therapist, speech therapist, art therapist, or special educator—who is also trained in working with animals. The animal involved in the therapy is specially selected, socialized, and prepared to work in a therapeutic context. The most commonly used animals include dogs, cats, horses, and small mammals.
Unlike more informal forms of interaction with animals, AAT has clearly defined therapeutic goals, structure, duration, and methods of evaluating its effectiveness. Emphasis is placed on safety, voluntariness, and the well-being of all participants. AAT can be used in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, and social services.
